BRIEF CAMP DESCRIPTION: Crystalaire Adventures is an adventure travel and education program in northern Michigan. We believe in offering playful, inclusive outdoor experiences in wild places that offer meaningful experiences. We are part of a larger coalition of programs that focus on designing fun and engaging social networks that let participants define and dictate the experience that they have. Rather than filling our trips with adult-developed programming, our participants get to help co-lead and create the experience on every trip.

CAMP LOCATION: We operate out of Camp Lookout, alongside the Lake Michigan shoreline in Frankfort south of the Sleeping Bear Dunes. Our trips take place around the country and region, into the Upper Peninsula, and even into Canada.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our philosophy is based around designing inclusive social groups that allow for participants to express themselves and have a say in the experience. Participants will set the schedule, control the route, and are given the freedom to develop their own games and activities while on our programs.

Participants will sleep in tents (excepting sailing programs, where accommodations are typically on the boats themselves). Participants will typically travel daily, learning to prepare their own meals on fires and camp stoves, setting up their own schedules, learning outdoor skills (survival skills, map and compass, etc...), and learning about group dynamics.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Crystalaire has been offering alternative outdoor adventure education experiences for almost a century. Our staff are highly trained, and will have lifeguarding and wilderness medicine certifications as well as prior experience. We believe in creating playful and inclusive trips in wild places that offer meaningful experiences for all participants. We consider each trip to be a "microsociety," and give our participants the chance to weigh in and decide how they want that "microsociety" to function, how they want people to be treated, and how they want group decisions to be made.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: 16 and 17 year old campers are welcome to join us on our Cojourn, a 3-week outdoor leadership intensive that focuses on our group management and social dynamics curriculum. More information can be found online.

18 - 21 year old applicants can join our Apprenticeship program for a 4-6 week intensive training in outdoor leadership. This is a paid internship.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: We provide scholarships based on your own assessment of your need. Let us know what help you need, we'll believe you and will do what we can to meet it.

FAMILY CAMP SESSION(S): Family Camps can be created using the Choose Your Own Adventure option.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: We plan trips year round, and are willing to work with you to plan a trip during a spring break, fall break, weekend, or other time of year. We also offer after school programs, can contribute to classroom curriculum or field trips, or can offer training and certifications throughout the year.

CAMP SESSION DATES & FEES:
Trips vary widely, ranging from 2-days to 3-weeks. For a complete set of programs, go to Our Camp Website Link: www.crystalaireadventures.com

CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:
Travel, Sailing, Adventure, Wilderness/Nature, Waterfront/Aquatics, Science, Math, Technology, and more. Maritime History, Marine Biology, Maritime Literature

CAMP LOCATION: Our office is located in downtown Newport, RI. This ship will move throughout New England, visiting the ports of Newport, Block Island and Providence RI, Boston, Nantucket, and Provincetown MA, Portsmouth NH, Portland ME, and many more destinations. Check Our Camp Website Link: www.ohpri.org for specific itineraries.

CAMP FACILITIES: At 200 feet, the Oliver Hazard Perry is the first ocean-going full-rigged ship to be built in the U.S. in over 100 years. It is the largest civilian sail training vessel in America. She has berths for 49 people overnight, and with 17 crew, a low camper to crew ratio creates a safe and fun environment. The ship is equipped with a steel hull, 3 masts, with square sails on all three masts, 20 sails totaling 14,000 square feet, and 7 miles of rope and wire. The engines run on a bio-diesel blend, and the ship is equipped with a modern galley (on-board kitchen), central air, an on-deck science lab, a library and wheel-chair accessibility above and below decks.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: With 17 professional crew and a capacity for 30-34 campers, our program promotes a dynamic and safe learning environment with a 2:1 ratio of campers to instructors. Campers will feel the thrill of steering a 500-ton ship, and learn to work the yards and sails while exploring the beautiful coasts of New England. They will learn safety at sea and perform important safety drills while acquiring skills in navigation, seamanship, sail handling, knots, and the language of the boat. Campers will explore the underwater world through snorkeling. They will understand wind, waves, tides and the ecology of sandy and rocky seashores. Sunsets, sunrises and the night sky will serve as the backdrop for this incredible experience, in addition to marine phosphorescence, dolphins and whales. Teamwork is an integral part of success onboard the boat, and in addition to learning about themselves, and achieving things they never imagined, they will make friendships to last a lifetime.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: In addition to witnessing the natural magic of the ocean and its inhabitants, each student crew will make friendships to last a lifetime. Campers will take responsibility for themselves and their fellow shipmates, learning to work as a team with others as they hoist and brace the yards on the ship's 130-foot tall rig and apply acquired navigational skills to guide the ship's course on a voyage of discovery.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: As a non-profit organization we are committed to making this amazing experience available to everyone. Because we are new, an endowment for scholarships is still being developed, however the first 10 sign ups will receive a 10% discount! Please contact us for group discounts. Scholarships will be made available in the near future.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: The Perry will sail year-round, offering experiences for high school and college age students, as well as adult sail-training and team building. The ship will spend the Summers in New England and the Winters in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

CAMP FACILITIES: Girls live in 1 of 17 large platform tents with their counsellors along the lakeshore. Waterfront activities take place in/on Cache Lake. Log-cabin library, craft house on hill overlooking lake, rustic theatre "lodge", lakeside screened dining hall.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, arts & crafts, dramatics, canoe-trips, nature program--please see our website for more information at Our Camp Website Link: www.campnorthway.com. Northway was founded in 1906, and is the oldest girls camp in Canada.

In addition to canoe trips throughout Algonquin, Northway offers swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, arts & crafts, dramatics and much more. Northway is a lot of fun!

We offer 13-day, 3&1/2-week and 7-week sessions, as well as special introductory 1-week sessions for girls ages 7-9.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: There is a 10% discount for siblings.

OTHER CAMP INFO: Northway was founded with the idea that girls should learn how to live simply in the outdoors and that the absence of appliances and luxuries would give campers a wilderness experience which they might draw upon throughout their lives. We try to maintain the idea that in-camp life should be almost as simple as life on a canoe trip. In camp the spirit is much the same as it is out in the wilderness--one of willingness to help others, to befriend every other camper and to appreciate the beauty of nature.

CAMP SESSION DATES & FEES:
13-Day, 3.5 week and 7 week sessions available. Please see our website for complete details on dates and rates.
